Belen Posada del Migrante

In May 2001 I did a photo essay for Latin America New Dispatch on Belen Posada del Migrante, a Saltillo-based, church-run shelter for Central American immigrants crossing Mexico to get to the States. Here are three of my favorite photographs from that "newsy" series.

I'm John Sevigny, a photographer and writer. This is my rapid, fire, breaking-news, don't think-just post, blog. My portfolio Website is over here.

My most recent project is "Happyland," and you can see it here. It goes up in May in Illinois and September in Minneapolis. Information to come.

If you're new to what I do, here's an introduction. I've had dozens of solo exhibitions, and given talks, workshops and presentations in the United States, Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Major projects include the cult classic, "Ladies' Bar, created over 10 months in some of the roughest bars in Guadalajara; "Nomads," a group of portraits of Central American immigrants crossing Mexico to get to the United States; and "El Muerto Pare el Santo," a personal project exploring issues related to mortality and existence. "Red Light Ghost Town," documents an abandoned prostitution district outside Monterrey, Mexico.

Another recent group of pictures is a project at Fotovisura called American Travel Diary. The most recent project, and the best at that, is Happyland, but it's not up anywhere yet, except in bits and pieces.

I previously worked as a photographer and writer for the Associated Press, an agency full of thieves and mouth-breathers, and EFE News, the official news agency of the Spanish government, a fine company.
